Ford Turns Plastic Bottles into Carpets for EcoSport

Added: 19 June 2019

Did you know that each Ford EcoSport produced is fitted with carpets made using 470 single-use plastic drink bottles?

Since its launch in 2012, the EcoSport has provided a new lease of life for more than 650 million 500ml bottles, weighing an estimated 8,262 metric tons*. If these bottles were laid end to end, they would stretch more than twice around the world!**

Having first using recycled plastic in the Ford Mondeo more than 20 years ago, the company now recycles 1.2 billion bottles globally per year.

To turn plastic bottles into car carpets, they first have to be shredded both the bottles into tiny flakes. These flakes are then heated to 260°C and melted down before being formed into fibres the width of a single human hair. The fibres are then spun into a yarn by twisting them together - and it is this material that is woven into carpets.
