Motability Scheme FAQ’s: Your Questions Answered

Over the past 35 years, Motability has helped over three million people get mobile by exchanging their mobility allowance to lease a brand new car.

Here, we have detailed some of the most common questions our customers ask…

Q: Am I eligible to join the Motability Scheme?                                                                     
A: To join the Motability Scheme, you must be in receipt of one of the following allowances:
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
You will need to have at least 12 months remaining on your allowance when you apply.                                                                                                                                                       


Q: Can one household have two customers who are both on the Motability Scheme?
A: There are no restrictions to the number of Motability Scheme cars within a household, as long as all individual applicants are each in receipt of a qualifying mobility allowance and meet the eligibility criteria.


Q: Will I get the Advance Payment back?
A: If you have chosen a car with an Advance Payment, it will need to be paid in full. This is a non-refundable upfront payment (not a deposit).


Q: Will I own the car at the end of the lease?
A: No, as you are on a leasing scheme, ownership of the vehicle remains with Motability Operations. At the end of your agreement you will have three options:
  • Lease another car through the Motability Scheme
  • You may be able to keep your current car longer by extending your lease
  • Return your car and have your allowance reinstated


Q: Can I take a test drive?
A: We strongly recommend that you take a test drive. Even if you are not the driver, we recommend that you try getting in and out of the car, test the seating and ensure there is plenty of space for yourself and any equipment before placing an order.


Q: What do I need to take with me when I place an order?
A: When it comes to placing an order, you will need to take:
  • Your Certificate of Entitlement (this is a letter from your benefits agency) to prove you are in receipt of the allowance
  • A recent utility bill to prove your address (i.e. gas/ electricity/ water bill, bank statement)
  • Anyone who will be on the insurance needs to be present with their driving licence or if they cannot attend, ask them to complete a Driver Consent form. One of our Day’s Motability specialists will complete the online application for you.


Q: How long will it take to get my new car?
A: The time taken to get a new car can vary depending on manufacturers and the model you have ordered. We will discuss the expected/estimated delivery time when you complete your application.
